Highland Park FIDO (Friends in Dog Ownership)
Flagging and Bagging 2024
Each year before DoDahDay, volunteers from Highland Park’s FIDO put flags with notes on them by dog poop piles along Highland Ave. Two weeks later, they collect all of the flags and the piles. This is intended to be a playful way of reminding people that it adds up, and everyone needs to bag it and trash it when our furry friends make a pile. One pile turns into multiple, and the impact is exponentially gross and unsanitary. The City of Birmingham has an ordinance that requires dog owners to clean up after their dogs or face a potential fine of $100. It is very tough to enforce, so FIDO volunteers found this flagging idea and decided to try it. We have found it does help bring awareness to the need to SCOOP the POOP. Poop is not fertilizer, it spreads bacteria and attracts flies, it stinks, and can really ruin your day if you step in it.
Please leave the flags in place. We plan to start flagging on May 1, 2024 and clean up on May 16, 2024 (rain date May 17). Then we celebrate at DoDahDay – the beloved dog festival and fundraiser for the Greater Birmingham Humane Society that originally took place in Highland Park and continued for many years. The festival is now held at Cahaba Brewing and will be May 18, 2024. If you’d like to help flag and/or bag, please contact us at highlandparkneighborhoodal@gmail.com.
