Alabama Power Company Good Roots Grant Tree Planting
FOHP was awarded $1800 from the Good Roots grant from the Alabama Power Company Foundation to replace eight aging out, nonnative cherry trees along Highland Avenue with native flowering Red Bud trees.

Annual It’s Nice To Have You in Highland Park event
Starting in 2024, FOHP has hosted this annual event bringing neighbors together while raising money for FOHP, Audubon, and the Birmingham Historical Society. More details can be found here.

Crosswalk Stanchion Campaign
Thanks to FOHP’s purchase, installation, and continued maintenance of HP’s crosswalk stanchions, traffic on Highland Avenue has noticeably slowed and made life for pedestrians significantly safer.

Tree Plantings
FOHP partnered with neighbor Mark Wilson to make his tree planting vision happen, installing 74 new trees in Caldwell and Rhodes parks. Afterwards, FOHP coordinated neighborhood volunteers to water these trees throughout summer and fall.

Highland Avenue Native Plant Median Project
FOHP partnered with Homegrown Habitat to plant only native plants in all of Highland Avenue’s medians. We raised funds to supplement the materials and labor being provided by the city. Medians from Rojo to IPC have been completed with continued weeding maintenance. The next two medians planned for work run along Rhodes Park near Park Towers. Preserving the Little Villa
FOHP played an integral role in saving the historic Little Italian Villa from being demolished and replaced with high-rise apartment complexes by funding a second engineering study on the viability of the
structure.

Wall Repairs
In 2023-2024, FOHP paid for the repair of four separate wall breaks along Highland Avenue across from the golf course. The breaks were caused by car accidents and a once in a generation ‘several day’ hard freeze when water behind the wall expanded.
